Square Bar

While I was up in West Chester, yet again, a buddy of mine took me out to this local bar because he said that it had good people and good food. So we stopped into this house-like structure called “Square Bar” to see how their wings added up.
With my choices being either Mild or Hot, I decided to go with the Hot to see what kind of punch it brought, and according to the bartender, it wasn’t that spicy (which I think she was fibbing, ’cause they were kinda hot). While I waited, we began a conversation with other bar-go-ers about good beer and how my Coors Light is not a beer, yadayadayada… Typical conversation as I drank my watered down brew. The wings came out, and as you can see by the picture, they looked like they needed a bit more sauce, so I finished pouring on my extra side to make it look a bit more appealing. The smell was familiar, and as I took my first bite it became clear as to why I knew that smell. This is yet another bar in West Chester that uses Franks Hot Sauce. After confirming this with the waiter, I dismissed the fact that it was not an original sauce and moved on. Why dismiss?? Well, this is not a bar that claims to have the greatest wings in the world, or galaxy, or universe… This is a happy small bar using a great bottled hot sauce AND they admit to using it, so why dwell? Let’s move on, instead, to some of the other things I look for in a good wing dish.
The actual chicken was one of the largest I have seen in a while. I mean they were frickin’ HUGE! You get a lot of meat for what you pay for, and to be honest, I don’t even think that I finished them all. The meat was extremely hot when it came out, but it was not very tender which was a little disappointing because there was so much of it to eat. It reminded me of the consistency that leftover turkey gets, but still tasted like chicken – Good taste, but a bit too dry.
The heat and flavor score is mainly attributed to the Frank’s Hot Sauce, so if you are looking for originality you need to look further. However, because of the shear size of these things and how they came out nice and hot for me, I would stop in to grab them again. These wings are certainly not the best… but they are not trying to be the best, and that’s why I like them.
